21 Reasons to be Happy and Why I’m Not

I’ve been unhappy for quite sometime now, and that’s okay. It’s okay to not be okay all the time. What’s not okay is to continue on this path and not do anything to change your emotional direction. I won’t go into specifics of what I’m not happy about, but let’s discuss why I should be happy.

  1. My son is healthy, thriving and hitting every milestone.
  2. I’m almost at my one year mark of breastfeeding.
  3. My Budget is finally working for me.
  4. Debt is dwindling.
  5. My tax refund is going to help me out a lot.
  6. My meal planner is coming out tomorrow! Wooohooo!
  7. I’m finally coming out with a cookbook sometime in March.
  8. My students are progressing significantly in writing.
  9. I’m not living paycheck to paycheck.
  10. I went to the doctor on January 21, and all of my results came back negative and/or normal. I have an absolute clean bill of health.
  11. I can afford to pay all of my bills.
  12. For once in my life, I have no bills that are late and I have nothing in collections.
  13. My son and I wake up every morning: alive and kicking,
  14. I’m finally going to start therapy.
  15. I’ve been able to let go of a lot of toxic people, and I’ve been able to recognize my own toxicity.
  16. I’ve been consistently practicing yoga.
  17. Drinking a falling of water a day has become increasingly attainable.
  18. My skin is clear and my bowels are regular.
  19. I’ve been cooking more and eating out less.
  20. I still have money in the bank from last check.
  21. There’s food in my pantry and fridge.

The list could go on, but with all of these positive things, I’m still unhappy. I’m excited to be starting therapy soon to be able to better understand this emotional turmoil I’m experiencing.

Yoga Makes Me Horny

Yes, you read that right. I’ve been practicing yoga for over 9 years and I have to say that after a 30-60 minute session, I’m ready to get it on and get it in. I’ve always wondered why and I finally decided to put Google to use and this article came up.

Yoga consists of many hip openers and stretches that open the entire body. For some who sit all day, aren’t getting any blood flowing in their pelvic region, which can stunt your libido.

For someone who is on a celibacy journey, having an increased libido is not easy, so I’m order to combat that, I’ve tried adding cardio to burn off that excess sexual energy. No such luck. Add to that, I’ve increased my veggie and fruit intake as well as adding protein smoothies.

Being vegan and practicing yoga puts your sex drive through the roof, but one of my goals this year was and is, no sexual activity of any kind. So I guess I’ll have to deal with it.

Don’t Let the Holidays Ruin Your Health and Fitness Goals

Many people are on a health and fitness journey and I often hear too many times that people will hault their journey until after the holidays. They do this in order to pig out and forgo any progress they’ve made, basically setting themselves back a few steps.

Why do this? What’s the point? Say you’ve lost ten pounds so far. You’re really going to risk gaining that ten pounds back and some? Priorities are clearly out of sort. 

Being vegan, I don’t typically partake in the food that everyone else indulges in, though I do make my own vegan version of these same foods. The difference is calories, fat, sodium, cholesterol, and what’s called “the itis.”

I am off work the next week, but that doesn’t mean that I am not meal prepping. In fact, I meal prepped before this post went out (last night). I have calorie goals since I’m breastfeeding as well as health goals when it comes to food choices. I’ve been on a roll and I dare not mess that up.

So how can one stick to their health and fitness goals through the holidays? Continue to do what you’re doing. Don’t hault your journey for foods that aren’t going to do anything but put you to sleep and gurgle your stomach. Also, don’t be so strict on yourself. Enjoy those foods, but in moderation. Don’t pig out. 

In order to reach these goals, you have to continue striving towards them, pushing through any obstacles that seem daunting.

Breastfeeding Series: Benefits and Challenges

Breast milk is specifically tailored to fit a baby’s nutritional needs, all nutritional needs. It changes as your baby does when they grow. There’s nothing else on earth more fitting for a baby than breastfeeding.

When your baby is born, the first milk the receive from your breast is called colostrum. It is rich in proteins and antibodies which protect the baby from environmental diseases and illnesses outside the womb. This colostrum is how your baby begins to build their immune system.

As your baby grows, the mature milk contains a higher fat and sugar level to meet the demands of your baby. Breastfed babies have a decreased chance of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and diabetes. They also have better cognitive development. Aside from all of that, breastfeeding creates this bond between the mother and child.

My son will be two months this Thursday and he can already push himself to stand, hold his head up, can turn his head from side to side while in his tummy, talk baby talk, focus in on objects, laugh, smile, has tremendous strength, scoot, turn his body so he can face me while he’s in his stomach, reach and grab objects, and can turn on his side while on his back. He is far developed than other babies of the same age and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that he’s breastfed.

Some challenges are that around the world, according to the World Health Organization, only about 40% of infants under 6 months are exclusively breastfed. Given the number of people in the world, that is a great number, almost half.

Many mothers face difficulties likelatching issues, pain, discomfort, and not enough milk coming in. Another issue is babies feeding on demand, most mothers feel like they can’t get anything done or they’re always holding their baby. It almost becomes a burden.

You then have women of the older generations imposing their beliefs that babies should have solids earlier than 6 months in order for them to sleep longer. Why would you want a baby to sleep longer? That’s increased risk of SIDS. My son typically will sleep in 4-5 hour chunks. He will occasionally sleep for 6 hours if I bath and then nurse him. In my opinion, wanting a baby to sleep longer is for selfish reasons and not the best interest of the baby.

Breastfeeding is a learned skill for the baby and the mother and many mothers get too frustrated. For the new moms, don’t let the beliefs of others influence your decision to breastfeed. Don’t let the temporary pain and discomfort discourage you, because it’s just that: temporary.

Fast Food for Standardized Testing? Nah.

Yesterday my students took their standardized test for the subject I teach (writing). Every year on standardized testing day, some fast food restaurant gives free breakfast. Now I’m all for free, however, the restaurants giving the free breakfast are terrible. This year, it happened to be the worst fast food place of all: McDeath…I mean McDonald’s.

McDonald’s has to be the worst fast food place of all fast food places. Their food is fake, full of chemicals, MSG, and a host of other things that should not be ingested. Everyone knows that they should not go there. Not only that, because everyone was waiting in line for their free meal, kids ended up being late.

Another reason I hate that these places give free fast food on testing day is that the parents will take their kids and give them this terrible food, which causes them to be sluggish, unfocused and sick. They won’t perform as well on their test because of the chemicals affecting their brain and ability to concentrate.

I really wish parents would stop giving their kids fast food. I have a student who gets donuts every morning for breakfast and for lunch they have some kind of animal on steroids because I have never seen meat that big. Then the parent wonders why this child is always sleep. The shit you’re feeding them is slowing them down and shutting their system down. To me, giving your child fast food is child abuse. People never think about what they’re feeding their child is child abuse. Child abuse comes in different forms but that’s a topic for another post.

A Vegan Baby, Arriving Soon!

You read that right. There’s a vegan bun in the oven and I couldn’t be more excited. As I finish up my first trimester, here’s how things went.


When I found out I was pregnant, I was numb. I did not want kids and finding out you’re pregnant and not married or in a relationship, pretty damn scary. I took two pregnancy tests (yes two because I thought the first one was lying), and then immediately went to my mom’s house. I cried as I told her and she jumped for joy (not because I was crying but because this is her first grandchild). As the days and weeks went on, I came to terms with it. 

At my first ultrasound, the doctor said that my baby was measuring rather small, that the heartbeat was on the low side of normal, and that there were several reasons it could be happening.

  1. My last period dates were wrong.
  2. My ovulation was late.
  3. It could be a slow pregnancy, which meant the baby could possibly not make it. 

Over the course of the next couple of weeks, I was on edge thinking the worst. I didn’t want it to be the third reason and was so scared. Apparently my mom and grandmother were too, they just didn’t want to stress me even more. Fast forward to my second prenatal appointment, the baby’s heart rate was in the normal range, it had grown tremendously, it was kicking its little foot and waving its hand. I felt so much joy and excitement. I had felt flutters since the last appointment but paid them no mind. Little did I know, that was the baby moving. 

My doctor said everything was normal, the baby looked fine and was growing as it should. Turns out, my ovulation was a week late and I do remember not feeling myself ovulate (I have severely painful ovulations but the month of July, I didn’t feel it at all). I am so glad that my baby is doing well.

Symptoms

I really didn’t have anything to notify me I was pregnant other than the fact that I missed my period. I keep track of my period like a professional watchdog and when it didn’t come (like a few days past) I took the tests. Now at about 4 weeks I experienced cramping, really sore breasts and outrageous avocado and kale cravings. It was on a whole other level. The sore breasts is what bothered me the most.

I did start taking prenatal vitamins, but my doctor didn’t like the ones I had, so she prescribed me another vegan prenatal . They are horse pills (meaning that they are huge), but for the sake of my baby, I’ll do whatever I have to do. 

Diet

My eating has been all over the place. I have not cooked much if at all. All I want to eat are samosas, fries, donuts, ice cream, and everything not healthy (but still vegan). Sometimes I have no appetite and sometimes I can’t stop eating. It’s really weird and fluctuates often. I have gained weight since my first prenatal appointment, which is a good thing. 

I was told come the second trimester, my eating will go back to normal, and I cannot wait for that to happen. I can’t stand leafy greens right now and I miss them, yet I have no appetite for them. 

Mood Swings

I will say that my attitude is not the best right now and absolutely everything and everyone annoys me (sorry y’all, but it’s true). I feel more sensitive to things that people say and I hate that. Everything just gets on my last nerves and I feel so annoyed at that. Usually I can let things slide, but not so much now. 

Baby’s Gender

So I do not yet know the baby’s gender. I will find out on October 16, a week after my birthday. I don’t have a preference of the sex, just as long as the baby is healthy and has 5 toes, 5 or 6 fingers (6 fingers on each hand runs in my family), and has all the right body parts in the right place. My mom wants a gender reveal party, however, I am not keen on the idea because a gender reveal party just sounds stupid. Like no one can bring gifts if they don’t know, so then I have to have a baby shower on top of that. I am that odd child in the family where “normal societal behaviors” don’t interest nor impress me.

Final Thoughts

I am excited to be a mom. Though I will be a single mom, that is how I envisioned if I ever had kids. Do I want a husband and family? Of course, but I just never saw that when I saw myself having my first child. I know that’s really odd because most women envision being married and having a home and career when they have kids. For me, as long as I had my own place, my own car, and 2 careers, I’m set (yes, I have two careers: I’m a blogger and educator). As long as I could take care of myself and my baby financially (which is why I have been working my ass off to pay debts), then whether or not I was married or in a relationship, just didn’t matter. Did I plan to get pregnant? Not at all, but the universe doesn’t adhere to plans. The universe knows what you can and can’t handle and I guess this whole time I have been preparing myself to be a mother and I could not be more happier.

Before I tell you about my experience here, let me just say that the best part of eating out as a vegan at a non vegan restaurant, is that your food comes out fast and is prepared fresh.

Now this restaurant is located in The Woodlands and if anyone knows the area, you know its bourgeoisie (that’s the correct way to spell the word, it’s not boujee or any other spelling), like for real for real. Walking up you see the outside area, and with the weather like it is in Texas, ain’t nobody sitting outside unless it’s night time, and even then, mosquitoes won’t let you be great and eat. 

Walking inside, they have a very sleek look. Lots of neural colors and white. It was pretty empty, guessing I beat the lunch hour rush, so there was no line. The lady who took my order was really nice and very patient.

I ordered as my appetizer the hummus with pita bread, which both are made in house, and as my meal I had the Veggie Nut Burger, 86 the cheese.

Both dishes were phenomenal. I would highly suggest them. The burger literally will melt in your mouth. The pita bread and hummus were the best I’ve had thus far.

What I also liked was it’s a self serve restaurant. You order and pay at the same time and then you get your own drink, silverware and napkins. You also can get your own to-go containers which is a plus because I feel waiters take entirely too long to bring the check and to-go containers. 

The only negative I have is that my appetizer and meal came at the same time. I would’ve preferred to get my appetizer before my meal. Not sure if that is something I should’ve requested, however, that’s the only negative I have. So, if you are ever in the Houston area, give them a try.

Nourish Juice Bar


Located off W Gray, this juice bar is so amazing and I love the atmosphere. I had been there once before. I ordered the Pink Starbust juice and a Buddha bowl. Both were absolutely amazing. The juice really tasted like candy and the kick from the ginger was perfect. 


The Buddha bowl was a curry style bowl with kale, quinoa, carrots, chickpeas and so much more earthy goodness. The curry dressing added so much flavor. I definitely want to try to recreate something like this.

Vegan Tamales and Cupcakes @ Dan Electro’s

I don’t typically go into Houston that often because I hate the traffic and it’s a helluva commute but when I saw this event was in The Heights, and that’s fairly close to me, I was down. 


It’s located off 24th street and it’s a fairly small venue with a backyard patio. I actually only came for the tamales but Sara the Cupcake Girl was there and I bought a dozen and a half cupcakes. 


I was rather disappointed that the tamales were not already heated and the guy brought a crockpot to heat them in and he showed up later than expected. The line was long, I got ate up by mosquitos, badly and ended up with room temperature tamales.


The tamales were good, however, they would’ve been better hot. I felt like he was ill prepared. At the end of the event, those who placed orders, he no longer could fill them, not sure the reasoning but Sara and her family are making them and I’m sure they’ll be awesome as her cupcakes are. 


I got to meet the president of the Houston Black Vegan Social, Snoddy, and I have been added to the team. I also met another one of the members, Kirby.


The venue was great, it’s just the mosquitos were relentless and it could be because my blood is sweet from all the fruit I’ve been, but I will be using my all natural big spray by my girl Jazzzie by Nature. 


There is another event this coming weekend at the same place and Sara and her family are making cupcakes and enchiladas, all vegan of course. I can’t wait.

24 Diner Review 

My first time coming here was in 2010 when my brother graduated with his undergrad degree. This is one of his favorite restaurants and it’s open 24 hours, like in the name.

It wasn’t crowded the first time we came and it wasn’t crowded this time. Another major thing I like was it wasn’t cold. Most restaurants I go to have me sleepy before I even order my food. 


The first time I went I had the Betsy Veggie. It’s a handcrafted burger made with beets, lentils, flaxseeds and other delicious goodness. I swear I tried to recreate it but no such luck. 


Since then I had been feigning for that burger so when we went last night, I was too hype. It tastes just as good as I remember. My waitress was pretty amazing. The waiter the first time I came was very knowledgeable about the burger so I was comfortable ordering it this time.

Children are particularly at risk as they are more sensitive to chemicals, plus they often play in areas which have been exposed to pesticides. By using organic methods of gardening and natural forms of pest control, you can negate these issues. This is why it’s important to wash your fruits and veggies you get from the shops!

Gardening entails a wide range of movement and this helps to build muscle and strengthen joints. It is also good for flexibility as you are often extending legs and arms to get to hard to reach areas. As with any form of exercise, to see any real benefits, you need to garden for at least 30 minutes at a time. This will burn calories and in the process help to lower your cholesterol levels; reduce blood pressure; decrease your risk of diabetes; and slow osteoporosis, which is particularly important for women.

Physical exercise also has a positive effect on the mind. It helps to alleviate depression and decrease stress levels. You are also working outside in the fresh air and this too has been shown to strengthen mental health.

We are all aware we should eat more fruits and vegetables. In the UK we have the ‘5 a Day’ campaign and in the USA dietary guidelines recommend that half your plate should comprise of fresh produce.

Fruits and vegetables are good for us for several reasons. First, they contain dietary fibre and this lowers the incidence of obesity and cardiovascular disease. Second, they contain a wide range of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents which combine to keep us healthy and ward off disease.

  1. The Environment

The biggest benefit for the environment, when you live off your garden, is the short distance the food has to travel from where it is grown to your plate. We are all being advised to reduce the ‘food miles’ of the produce we consume and the best ways to do this are to buy locally and eat seasonally. When you rely on the fruits and vegetables you have produced yourself you can only eat in season and it is always local. Furthermore, you will decrease your plastic wastage. Buying from the shop also entails bringing home with you a large quantity of plastic the food is packaged in.

Deciding Where to Grow

Vegetables grow best where it is sunny, so choose carefully when you are deciding where to plant. You can always add shade for more delicate crops such as salad and fruit bushes.

The majority of soil found in gardens will suit vegetable growing. However, if your soil is shallow, full of stones or clay rich, which will be cold and wet in winter, build raised beds or plant in large pots.

Dealing with Pests

One advantage of growing your own produce is the avoidance of pesticides and therefore you will want to deal with slugs and snails naturally.

Keep the plot clear of weeds and leaves and put a paved or soil path between beds, so you or the birds can spot pests easily. If you are having particular problems you could always lay down organic slug pellets.

Preparing the Soil

Before you start planting you should turn the soil over and remove weeds, roots and stones. This helps to prevent weeds returning and improves drainage. Some gardens will suffer the blight of perennial weeds and in this case cover the soil with newspaper and add a layer of compost about 5cm in depth.

Getting the Best From Planting

Follow the instructions on the seed packets as closely as possible, especially when you are new to vegetable gardening. Compost can be hugely beneficial to your garden so collect your lawn clippings, organic kitchen waste and anything you prune from the garden.

While you may read to let your ground lie fallow for a period, such as with crop rotation in farming, this isn’t possible in a small space. However, what you can do is grow different crops in a bed in subsequent years.

Easy Fruits and Vegetables to Grow

As a beginner you will want to choose crops which are easy and provide a wide range of nutrients.

Vegetables: Many people start out with courgettes and runner beans as these are particularly easy to grow. Broccoli, kale and spinach are excellent choices nutritionally and varieties of beans can be filling and protein-rich.

Root vegetables: Potatoes can be used in a wide variety of ways in cooking and are easy to store. Beetroot, carrots and onions are also good choices.

Salad: Salad vegetables and herbs are expensive and in the summer most families will consume large amounts of them. Tomatoes, peppers, radishes, cucumbers and spring onions are fast growing and plentiful. Herbs will add flavour to any dish and in the winter months can be grown indoors.

Fruit: Don’t forget about fruit as yields are high and will last through the season. They are easy to freeze and to turn into jams. Apples, pears, cherries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries are wise choices for beginners.

Extras: It is best to keep in mind what you like to cook with when you are planting.  Garlic and mushrooms provide health benefits and spirulina, although less well known, is a great nutritional addition if you have relatively little space.

A Vegetable Calendar Will Help You Plan

One of the biggest helps to you as you plan your growing cycle will be a vegetable calendar. This tells you exactly the steps you need to take to live off your own garden. Highlighting when you need to plant each vegetable and care instructions until it is time to harvest. For example, if you want to grow radishes it tells you to plant them in the first week of April under cloches and that they will be ready to eat by the end of May. Gooseberries need pruning in the first quarter of the year, mulching in early April, watering in June and are ready for picking in July.

Once you have a plan and start working in your garden, you will soon enjoy the many benefits of living from your own land.

Yoga: Fitness Fad or Fitness Heaven by @matr3moni

Yoga has been trending in the fitness world for a while now. It makes you wonder if it’s really all that people make it out to be, or if it’s just another fitness fad that will fade out for another to replace it. When looking on social media or even when just searching the web, you can find all kinds of information saying that yoga is the best thing since sliced bread for everyone- able bodies and those with injuries. There has been this myth circulating that yoga causes more injury than it does to help injuries. Well I’m here to say, as a disabled bodied, as well as a yogi in training, that this is totally incorrect. It’s always easy to blame an exercise versus the people who do them incorrectly. Today let’s talk about what yoga really is and some of the types that can actually help everyone.

What is Yoga exactly?

Yoga is a very self disciplined Indian ancient practice that focuses primarily on flexibility, breathing, and strength, to help boost your mental and physical welfare. Yoga originated in India over 5,000 years ago, so yoga being a fad is completely FALSE. It has been adopted in not only other countries, but is now one of the most common practiced activities in schools and fitness clubs, as well as in hospitals for post surgical procedures that produce the best results. Yoga is not always just about what you’re doing, but how you’re doing it as well.

What can yoga do for me and my injuries? 

Yoga has been studied and proven to be one of the most effective ways to strengthen the body, improve flexibility and also balance. For those who have injuries like me, it’s extremely beneficial. It helps with high blood pressure, depression, stress, heart disease, aches and pains, just to name a few. The list of benefits can go on. I know it is hard to believe, but it even helps with lower back pain.  Due to the nature of the practice, it allows those who have injuries to adjust poses to their personal comfort, allowing for a better result and less pain from injuries. Many people with injuries feel like they have to get into the gym and workout with hardcore fitness routines, or do water aerobics, in order to become healthy. Although these types of  exercises are great for some, this is really not true. I have talked to many men who have severe injuries who assume yoga is only for women and that absolutely is not true. I have gone into a yoga class where I was the only woman, and they were doing things I knew I  wasn’t going to be able to do. I say that to say, all exercise that helps your injuries so that you can function without hollering out in pain is great, no matter the gender.

My 5 types of yoga and their benefits:

There are so many different types of yoga and they seem to multiply each year. There are basic yoga practices as well as the more intense, but this allows the individual to choose what better suits their needs. Here are my top 5 yoga practices and their benefits:

  1. Ashtanga– is an arrangement of yoga that focuses primarily on connecting breathing techniques with all of the poses. The breathing techniques are designed to center the mind while controlling the flow of breath throughout the body which enhances flexibility and strength. This is strict a practice with poses being done in a continuous and specific order.                                                                                                                      **Some pose names: Standing still, sun salutation, thumb to foot pose, hand to foot pose, extended right triangle pose, resolves right triangle pose, half bound lotus pose                           
  2. Bikram or Hot Yoga– is one of the hottest, and I mean that literally, yoga practices where you practice in heated rooms of 95-100 degrees. If you don’t like to get sweaty, then you just need to skip to the next one. Bikram takes you through 26 poses whereas Hot Yoga can and may be varied in the amount and poses. These classes are very popular because they help with detoxification and they increase flexibility.                                                                                                                                              **Some pose names: Half moon pose, awkward pose, standing bow pose, standing head to knee pose, eagle pose, balancing pose, tree pose, toe standing pose, dead body pose                                                                                                                                           
  3. Hatha– is what I usually advise beginners to start off with in order to learn not only your bodies but also to get the hang of poses. Hatha is a “How to” type of yoga. This allows those practicing to learn the movements and basic postures. You get to choose the pace and style according to where you are and what injuries you need to cater to.   4. Vinyasa– is very similar to Ashtanga and Hastha but it centralizes poses around the sun salutation while also synchronizing  your breath to match the 12 poses. It can also be called the “arranging something in a special way” yoga. This type of yoga is great for beginners and the more advanced alike. Vinyasa strengths the core while connecting movements with your breathing.   5. Restorative– is the most relaxing and soothing type of yoga.  Restorative is the absolute best yoga practice for those who have injuries. With at least 5 poses per class, you are able to completely relax you body. This type of yoga is better than a power nap and is also referred to as Yin yoga. These are only my top five types of yoga that can help ease those who have injuries into become actively fit again. I know it can become hard at times especially when it comes to joint issues but you can still push through and make your injuries and/or conditions much better. The better you feel the more you’ll want to do. There is so much information on yoga especially on Youtube. At first yoga seemed like a fitness fad until I dove deeper into it, but now it is most definitely a fitness heaven for all, young and old. There is nothing like working on your body, mind and soul, all at one time. Yoga is no fitness fad but definitely fitness heaven for all. Make this the year you get out and try to become healthy, even if it’s not yoga. Get up, get out and do something-it may very well change your entire life.
